Mixed-methods in Research

# Mixed-Methods Research: From Qualitative Inquiry to Quantitative Validation

**Duration:** 30 Hours (15 Lectures × 2 Hours)

## Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

* Understand the principles of mixed-methods research.
* Conduct qualitative analysis of textual data.
* Develop codes, categories, and themes from qualitative findings.
* Construct a questionnaire based on qualitative evidence.
* Collect quantitative data from a defined population.
* Analyze quantitative data and integrate qualitative and quantitative findings.
* Prepare a mixed-methods research report.

## Module I: Introduction to Mixed-Methods Research (4 Hours)

* Meaning and characteristics of mixed-methods research
* Rationale for integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches
* Sequential Exploratory Mixed-Methods Design (QUAL → quan)
* Applications in psychology, education, literature, nursing, and social sciences

## Module II: Qualitative Phase – Textual Analysis (8 Hours)

* Selection of the text (e.g., *Chandalika*)
* Close reading and familiarization
* Identifying meaning units
* Open coding
* Categorization of codes
* Theme development through thematic analysis
* Ensuring credibility and reflexivity in qualitative research

## Module III: Instrument Development (6 Hours)

* Converting themes into measurable constructs
* Writing questionnaire items
* Response formats (Likert, semantic differential, ranking)
* Content validation by experts
* Pilot testing and questionnaire refinement

## Module IV: Quantitative Phase (8 Hours)

* Defining the target population
* Sampling techniques
* Questionnaire administration
* Data coding and entry
* Descriptive statistics
* Introduction to inferential statistics
* Reliability analysis and construct validation

## Module V: Integration and Report Writing (4 Hours)

* Integrating qualitative and quantitative findings
* Joint interpretation of results
* Writing a mixed-methods research report
* Limitations, ethical considerations, and future directions

## Practical Components

1. Read and analyze *Chandalika*.
2. Generate qualitative codes.
3. Organize codes into categories.
4. Develop themes.
5. Construct a questionnaire from the themes.
6. Conduct expert validation.
7. Administer the questionnaire to a selected population.
8. Analyze survey data.
9. Integrate qualitative and quantitative findings.
10. Prepare and present a mixed-methods research report.

## Suggested Readings

1. Creswell, J. W., & Plano Clark, V. L. *Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research.*
2. Braun, V., & Clarke, V. *Thematic Analysis: A Practical Guide.*
3. Creswell, J. W., & Poth, C. N. *Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design.*
4. Tashakkori, A., & Teddlie, C. *SAGE Handbook of Mixed Methods in Social & Behavioral Research.*

This syllabus closely follows your intended research pipeline:

**Literary Text (Chandalika) → Thematic Analysis → Coding → Categories → Themes → Questionnaire Development → Survey → Statistical Analysis → Integration of Findings → Research Report.**
