Organized by Rabindrik Psychotherapy Research Institute Trust (RPRIT), Registered Academic Trust by Indian Trust Act,1882, REGD.NO.150600103, DARPAN ID WB/2025/0514195.
Background:
Rabindrik Psychotherapy Research Institute Trust (RPRIT), registered academic trust for higher learning under Indian Trust Act, 1882, has completed 7th term applied psychometrics course.
Modern psychological research increasingly demands the application of psychometric principles beyond theoretical construction and into real-life problem-solving contexts. Traditional psychometrics primarily focuses on the development and evaluation of psychological tests, emphasizing item characteristics, reliability, and validity. In contrast, applied psychometrics extends these principles into action research and real-world applications—where psychometric tools are used for diagnosis, intervention, and management in everyday life situations.
According to Dr. Debdulal Dutta Roy, PhD, the distinction between Psychometrics and Applied Psychometrics can be The distinction between Psychometrics and Applied Psychometrics lies primarily in their purpose and scope. Psychometrics is primarily concerned with the theoretical construction of psychological tests, focusing on the measurement of mental attributes through rigorous test development procedures. It emphasizes item statistics such as item difficulty, discrimination, and guessing, mainly to refine the quality and precision of test items. Psychometrics also aims to develop theories related to test reliability and validity and to establish generalized norms applicable across populations. Knowledge of applied areas is relatively less important in this domain, as the primary goal is to advance measurement theory and methodological precision.
In contrast, Applied Psychometrics extends these principles into real-life contexts where psychological tests are used to address and manage everyday human problems. It focuses on using item statistics not merely for test construction but for understanding human variability and designing interventions, often within the framework of action research. Reliability and validity coefficients are interpreted for solving practical problems rather than for theoretical refinement alone. Instead of relying on universal norms, applied psychometrics emphasizes situation-specific norms suited for classification, diagnosis, and management in particular contexts—such as clinical, educational, industrial, or environmental settings. Therefore, knowledge of applied areas becomes essential in applied psychometrics, as it enables researchers and practitioners to meaningfully explore variability, apply psychological principles, and support evidence-based management and decision-making.
This distinction underscores the transition from theoretical measurement models to applied frameworks that address human variability, management, and intervention.
The course, therefore, integrates psychometric theory with research methods, data analysis, and applied problem-solving, providing researchers in psychology and allied sciences with tools to design, analyze, and interpret psychological measures across diverse settings.
Recent Achievements & Recognition
RPRIT is the registered vendor for Tata Power in psychometric assessment. RPRIT has a strong track record of mentoring undergraduate students through research internships. In 2024, RPRIT offered research internships to 11 undergraduate students from Maharaja Manindra Chandra College on psychometric data analysis and 13 students from the department of applied psychology of the University of Calcutta. RPRIT received appreciation letters from these institutions in recognition of its contribution to student research and skill development.
Additionally, RPRIT is proud to announce the publication of a book on statistics, developed in collaboration with Acharya Bangalore B-School (ABBS), Bangalore. This initiative brings together esteemed scholars, including Dutta Roy Sir, President of RPRIT, along with Prof. Naresh Babu and Dr. Sharma from ABBS. This collaboration reflects RPRIT’s commitment to advancing statistical knowledge and its practical applications in research and analysis.
Objective of course
This training introduces students, researchers, and professionals to the principles and practice of applied psychometrics for action research and PhD preparation. It blends theory with hands-on experience in test construction, reliability and validity estimation, and data analysis using JAMOVI and R-Studio. Trainees learn to measure psychological attributes, interpret data, and apply results across health, education, industry, and life skills. Through real datasets and practical exercises, the training builds skills to apply psychometrics in research and counseling, supporting academic and professional growth.
Post Learning: Trainees can customise the psychological test for action research in the industry potentially join the faculty at institutes like RPRIT.
