1. Programme Overview: Successful doctoral research requires more than theoretical knowledge of research methodology. A prospective PhD scholar must develop the ability to identify research problems, explore research variables, develop appropriate research instruments, collect and analyse data, interpret findings, and communicate research outcomes systematically. The Pre-PhD Certificate Programme in Mixed-Method Survey Research is designed to develop these essential research competencies before entering, and during the initial stages of, doctoral study. The programme introduces participants to the systematic integration of quantitative survey methods and qualitative inquiry, enabling them to understand research problems from both numerical and contextual perspectives. The emphasis will be on learning by doing, with a strong focus on practical research skills and their application.
2. Duration and Contact Hours: The programme will be conducted over a period of 3 months, comprising 72 hours of classroom instruction, with 6 contact hours per week. The teaching-learning process will include lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, research discussions, assignments and guided research activities. The programme is intended for students preparing for PhD admission, newly enrolled doctoral scholars, postgraduate students aspiring to pursue doctoral research, and researchers in the social sciences and allied disciplines.
3. Exploring Research Variables: The first major competency of the programme is the ability to identify and explore research variables. Participants will learn how to recognise relevant variables from a research problem, define them conceptually and operationally, classify variables, and examine possible relationships among them. Emphasis will be placed on transforming a broad area of interest into measurable and researchable variables.
4. Developing Research Instruments: Participants will learn the principles and procedures involved in research instrument development. This will include conceptualisation of constructs, item generation, scaling, preparation of questionnaires and schedules, pilot testing, and basic understanding of validity and reliability. Participants will also learn how to select appropriate existing instruments and evaluate their suitability for a particular research context.
5. Data Collection: The programme will provide practical knowledge regarding sampling, survey administration, qualitative data collection, field procedures and research ethics. Participants will learn how to plan data collection systematically, maintain research quality, minimise sources of bias, and ensure ethical treatment of research participants.
6. Data Analysis and Interpretation: A major component of the programme will focus on quantitative and qualitative data analysis. Participants will develop an understanding of how quantitative data can be organised, analysed and interpreted to identify patterns, differences and relationships, while qualitative data can be examined to identify meaningful categories, patterns and themes. The emphasis will be on understanding the relationship between data analysis and research questions, rather than treating statistical or qualitative techniques as isolated procedures.
7. Mixed-Method Integration: The distinctive feature of the programme will be the development of competency in mixed-method research. Participants will learn how to organise research findings, present and interpret results, develop discussions, relate findings to existing literature, and prepare research reports and research papers. The training will also help participants understand how research methodology, analysis, interpretation and discussion are connected within a coherent academic report.
9. Research Competency Development: The programme is designed around a complete research process: Explore → Formulate → Measure → Collect → Analyse → Integrate → Interpret → Report. Thus, the objective is not simply to provide knowledge about research methodology but to develop the practical competence required to conduct research systematically and independently.
10. Importance for PhD Research: Contemporary social science research increasingly requires researchers to examine complex phenomena from multiple perspectives. Quantitative evidence can demonstrate measurable patterns, relationships and differences, whereas qualitative evidence can provide deeper insight into experiences, meanings, perceptions and contextual factors.
